Regional Medical Center of Central Alabama has a very clear goal: to help people live healthier lives. That means we treat the whole person, and deal with issue of mental health with the same level of attention as physical health. Our psychiatrists look closely at what’s going on in your life to determine your mental state and come up with treatments that relieve emotional stress and pain. We all have bad days, but when those bad days begin to outnumber the good, our mental health professionals are here to support you, and help you return to a healthier state of mind.

Psychiatric geriatric services are performed at Regional Medical Center of Central Alabama through our senior care program and facility. Senior Care is a 13-bed facility for adults 55 years of age and older. Admission is voluntary and patients must meet the clinical admission criteria. Hospitalization is covered by Medicare and other insurance providers.

The following symptoms and behaviors may be signs that a loved one is in need of professional treatment:

  • Abusive or assaultive behavior which is a risk to self or others
  • Delirium, disorientation, bizarre or delusional behavior
  • Excessive or unreasonable fear
  • Hallucinations
  • Impaired or rapid decline in mental state
  • Obsessive-compulsive behavior
  • Rapid change in nutritional or sleeping habits
  • Self-mutilation behavior
  • Severe decline in ability to perform day-to-day activities
  • Severely agitated behavior
  • Suicide attempt or thoughts of ending one’s life
  • Toxic effects from psychotropic medication

The goal of Regional Medical Center of Central Alabama 's senior care team is to help patients return to as much of an independent life as possible. Under the direction of a psychiatrist, a team of physicians, nurses, social workers, therapists and other health care providers, we offer a structured plan of individual counseling, group therapy, coordinated activities and family support.
